I was in shock to see the result of the match. I couldn't believe what i saw. Not that I expected them to win but never in my wildest dream i expected them to go down this way. I thought a nation that lives and breathes football would atleast put up a fight but no, they didn't, there was no coordination or discipline. There were defensive lapses. Allowing the opposition's player to roam freely in the box cost them dearly. Running around aimlessly did not help their cause either. It was humiliating to watch the game after awhile. Not to take anything away from the winners but the losing team deserved what they got.
For those don't know, I am talking about the FIFA World Cup Semi-final match between Germany and Brazil. The former annihilated the latter. The scoreline was 7-1. Yes, Germans scored seven goals against the team who were considered favourite to win this tournament. It was a stunning victory for Die Mannschaft. They were merciless in front of the goal and their passing was second to none. It was pure joy to see the Germans playing. They brought a rhythm in the game.
In the post match interview, Brazil's head coach Luiz Felipe Scolari accepted the responsibility for this defeat but gave no hint whether he intended to remain as Brazil coach after the competition. He also called this loss as 'the worst day of his life'. To the people of Brazil, Scolari said, 'my message for the Brazilian people is that we did what we could and we did what we think was our best'. He also lauded the Germans for their valiant effort on the field.' we lost to a great team with great skill that took six minutes to change the game with four goals in an extraordinary manner'.
Fans may blame absense of star striker Neymar Jr. and captain Thiago Silva as the cause of defeat. Yes, their presence might have given them a fighting chance but it was not to be. I believe Brazillians lost because Germans were better than them. They controlled the game from first whistle. German Coach Joachim Low's men outplayed their opponent in almost every department. Scolari said, the game took six minutes to change'. Also, I think Brazil didn't play to their usual standards. Emotions were running high and perhaps the players got carried away with it. In Low's words, "it was important to meet this passion and these emotions with calm, courage and with our own strength".
Also, Germany striker Miroslav Klose made history by scoring his 16th world cup goal, setting a new record in the process. The 39 year old striker attacked like a poacher, having an effort denied by goalkeeper Julio Cesar, Klose calmly slotted the ball in the net when the ball bounced back to him. The game saw another German striker Thomas Muller, scoring twice to take his tally to five goals. The 24 year old year reached the landmark of 10 world cup goals thus far, making him just the third player to score five or more in two separate world cup editions.I believe a clever and instinctive striker like him will definitely have a say in the finals of the world's greatest tournament.
With Brazil eliminated from the competition, the locals may have lost their interest in the tournament, but for the fans across the world, World Cup 2014 has been nothing short of a surprise. It has been a joy to watch so far. Some results have been shocking and there were some breath taking moments.
With two more giants (Netherlands and Argentina) clashing tonight, I am looking forward to be a witness of more such moments.
