SHOCKS AND SURPRISES = 2014 FIFA WORLD CUP

I was in shock to see the result of the match. I couldn't believe what i saw. Not that I expected them to win but never in my wildest dream i expected them to go down this way. I thought a nation that lives and breathes football would atleast put up a fight but no, they didn't, there was no coordination or discipline. There were defensive lapses. Allowing the opposition's player to roam freely in the box cost them dearly. Running around aimlessly did not help their cause either. It was humiliating to watch the game after awhile. Not to take anything away from the winners but the losing team deserved what they got.

For those don't know, I am talking about the FIFA World Cup Semi-final match between Germany and Brazil. The former annihilated the latter. The scoreline was 7-1. Yes, Germans scored seven goals against the team who were considered favourite to win this tournament. It was a stunning victory for Die Mannschaft. They were merciless in front of the goal and their passing was second to none. It was pure joy to see the Germans playing. They brought a rhythm in the game.

In the post match interview, Brazil's head coach Luiz Felipe Scolari accepted the responsibility for this defeat but gave no hint whether he intended to remain as Brazil coach after the competition. He also called this loss as 'the worst day of his life'. To the people of Brazil, Scolari said, 'my message for the Brazilian people is that we did what we could and we did what we think was our best'. He also lauded the Germans for their valiant effort on the field.' we lost to a great team with great skill that took six minutes to change the game with four goals in an extraordinary manner'.

Fans may blame absense of star striker Neymar Jr. and captain Thiago Silva as the cause of defeat. Yes, their presence might have given them a fighting chance but it was not to be. I believe Brazillians lost because Germans were better than them. They controlled the game from first whistle. German Coach Joachim Low's men outplayed their opponent in almost every department. Scolari said, the game took six minutes to change'. Also, I think Brazil didn't play to their usual standards. Emotions were running high and perhaps the players got carried away with it. In Low's words, "it was important to meet this passion and these emotions with calm, courage and with our own strength".

Also, Germany striker Miroslav Klose made history by scoring his 16th world cup goal, setting a new record in the process. The 39 year old striker attacked like a poacher, having an effort denied by goalkeeper Julio Cesar, Klose calmly slotted the ball in the net when the ball bounced back to him. The game saw another German striker Thomas Muller, scoring twice to take his tally to five goals. The 24 year old year reached the landmark of 10 world cup goals thus far, making him just the third player to score five or more in two separate world cup editions.I believe a clever and instinctive striker like him will definitely have a say in the finals of the world's greatest tournament.

With Brazil eliminated from the competition, the locals may have lost their interest in the tournament, but for the fans across the world, World Cup 2014 has been nothing short of a surprise. It has been a joy to watch so far. Some results have been shocking and there were some breath taking moments.

With two more giants (Netherlands and Argentina) clashing tonight, I am looking forward to be a witness of more such moments.

What the CJP won and Amit Shah's gamble

A joke became an identity. An identity became a protest. And a protest, dismissed as an online tantrum, forced one of the most powerful governments in modern India to retreat. That is the short history of the Cockroach Janta Party, or CJP. Born in May 2026 from six sarcastic words posted online, the movement travelled from memes to Jantar Mantar , from ridicule to repression, and finally to a ministerial resignation and promises of systemic reform. In barely ten weeks, it achieved what established opposition parties had often failed to do: it converted diffuse youth anger into a focused political cost. But movements are judged not only by the moment they break through. They are also judged by what they do after the breakthrough. CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke has now demanded the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the police action against protesters during the July 20 “ Sansad Chalo ” (“March to Parliament”) rally. Other senior CJP figures have backed holding Shah...

The internet built the Modi era. Can it also disrupt it?

The BJP mastered social media to bypass traditional gatekeepers. Now, young Indians are using the same digital space to challenge its narrative and overcome a culture of political fear. The BJP understood the political power of the internet before most of its opponents did. Social media allowed Narendra Modi to reduce his dependence on traditional journalism, speak directly to voters and build a political image that was everywhere at once. Online campaigns did not merely promote the BJP. They helped create the Modi era. But the internet does not remain loyal to those who master it first. When the weapon changes hands Young Indians are now using the same digital space to question authority, ridicule political messaging and turn private frustration into public anger. The Cockroach Janta Party, or CJP, is the latest example. What began as an online satirical response to a judicial remark about unemployed youth soon became a rallying point for anger over unemployment, examination paper lea...

Short Story - Living Your True Life

Aditi loved him deeply and so did Anil. But she wanted other things too. But pursuing them was hard as it would put their relationship in jeopardy or so she thought. Whenever Aditi expressed her desire for something, Anil would put her down saying, it would affect their relationship. It kept her confined and stopped her from fulfilling her potential. Yet, she said nothing. Over time, Anil felt as if he was the sole decision-maker in their relationship. Whether it was a decision about choosing a restaurant to eat or picking a holiday destination, it was he who made them. This affected her confidence and lowered her self-esteem. One day, her friend Shikha visited her. She noticed these patterns and told her about them. At first, she didn’t believe her, but with time, she began to notice them herself. Just to be sure, she looked around the house. She noticed that most of the things that they bought were chosen by him not her. She checked out the latest pictures from their holiday....
